Entering aged care: a checklist

Transitioning yourself or a loved one into aged care can be daunting and an emotional experience for all involved. To make the process a little easier and clearer for everyone, we have formed a list of steps involved. We would be happy to help you through this process so please contact us if you need some assistance.

The following are some steps to get you started:

1. IDENTIFY A NEED FOR GREATER SUPPORTIVE CARE

There may be a gradual decline in health or independence, or a significant health event, which leads to the need for more support and health care services.

2. OBTAIN AN ACAT ASSESSMENT

To access Commonwealth funded aged care services, a valid ACAT (Aged Care Assessment Team) approval must be obtained. See your doctor or refer to the My Aged Care website for more information.

3. DECIDE THE TYPE OF CARE YOU REQUIRE

With the assistance of the ACAT, a decision needs to be made around what type of support services are needed. This could be:

• Community based care (in your home)

• Respite care (short term)

• Permanent residential care

Presently, Olivet provides Respite and Permanent residential care.

4. CONSIDER THE FINANCIAL IMPLICATIONS

Contact us to discuss the basic costs involved with accepting residential care or get financial advice from a reputable aged care financial advisor.

5. CHOOSE YOUR LEVEL OF SUPPORT

If you are deciding whether residential aged care is for you, whether permanent or respite, please contact us for an inspection of our facility and an informal chat about how we can assist. We are happy to help in any way we can.
